2009 CSA Information!
1. CSA (community supported agriculture) is a partnership of mutual commitment between a farm and a community of supporters which provides a direct link between the production and the consumption of food. 2. Becoming a member creates a responsible relationship between people and the food they eat, the land on which it is grown and those who grow it. 3. Members purchase a share of the harvest for the growing season, which helps pay for the seeds, fertilizer, water, equipment maintenance, labor, etc. 4. Each share is usually designed to provide weekly vegetable and fruit needs for a family of four. 5.In return, the farm provides a healthy supply of fresh seasonal produce throughout the growing season. 6. Growing season runs from May to mid-October, with mother nature's approval of course. 7. Crops are planted in succession in order to provide a continuous weekly supply of mixed fruits and vegetables. 8. As crops rotate throughout the season, weekly shares vary in size and types of produce, reflecting the local growing seasons and conditions. 9. Varieties of vegetables not seen in grocery stores, such as heirloom tomatoes, will also be available through the CSA program. 10. Different share options available, depending on your needs and budget.
Why is Community Supported Agriculture Important? 1. CSA's direct marketing gives farmers and consumers the fairest return on their products. 2. CSA keeps food dollars in the local community and contributes to the maintenance and establishment of regional food production. 3. CSA encourages communication and cooperation among farmers. 4. With a "guaranteed market" for their produce, farmers can invest their time in doing the best job they can rather than looking for buyers. 5. CSA supports a biodiversity of a given area and the diversity of agriculture through the preservation of small farms producing a wide variety of crops. 6. CSA creates opportunity for dialogue between farmers and consumers. 7. CSA creates a sense of social responsibility and stewardship of local land. 8. CSA puts "the farmer's face on food" and increases understanding of how, where, and by whom our food is grown.
